Septicemia due to a maltose-positive, glucose-negative strain of group C Neisseria meningitidis.

A glucose-negative, maltose-positive strain of group C Neisseria meningitidis was isolated from the blood of a 63-year-old man. Interestingly, maltose degradation was detected by radiometric methods but not by growth methods.

Complete genome sequence of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B strain MC58.

The 2,272,351-base pair genome of Neisseria meningitidis strain MC58 (serogroup B), a causative agent of meningitis and septicemia, contains 2158 predicted coding regions, 1158 (53.7%) of which were assigned a biological role. Three major islands of horizontal DNA transfer were identified; two of these contain genes encoding proteins involved in pathogenicity, and the third island contains codi...

Genome sequence of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B strain H44/76.

Neisseria meningitidis is an obligate human pathogen. While it is a frequent commensal of the upper respiratory tract, in some individuals the bacterium spreads to the bloodstream, causing meningitis and/or sepsis, which are serious conditions with high morbidity and mortality. Here we report the availability of the genome sequence of the widely used serogroup B laboratory strain H44/76.

Nonopsonic phagocytosis of group C Neisseria meningitidis by human neutrophils.

Although complement-mediated bactericidal activity in serum has long been known to be very important in host defense against Neisseria meningitidis, recent studies have shown that opsonic phagocytosis by neutrophils is also important. The purpose of this study was to determine if endemic group C N. meningitidis strains were susceptible to nonopsonic (complement- and antibody-independent) phagoc...
